Atlantic City introduced legalized gambling in 1978. It was intended to be a lifeline for the New Jersey shore town, which had fallen on hard times after booming in the early 1900s when it was known as the “World’s Playground.” Casinos popped up along the Boardwalk and the city’s fortunes improved. But recent years have not been as kind. The Great Recession and increased gambling options in surrounding states have dealt a serious blow to AC’s economy. There has been a continuous net migration out of Atlantic City since 2007 and it is expected to continue through at least 2016.
