It is now received wisdom that the biggest challenge for the modern executive is winning the “war for talent.” That is obviously an exaggeration. In most cases, much more basic factors – such as being able to produce what customers want in an economical way, having access to profitable markets and the rest – are likely to have a greater impact on a business’s outlook. True, having good people will help the business make the right decisions and then execute them. But that is assuming everything else is equal.
