It was a perfect day for a horse race, but a less-than-perfect ending for Triple Crown hopeful California Chrome. The fan-favorite just didn’t have it in him to win the Belmont Stakes and break the 36-year drought: despite breaking out of the gate well, he never even made it to the top of the pack, running second, third, fourth at one point even dropping to fifth before eventually finishing in fourth place dead-heat finish the 9 horse, Wicked Strong. Tonalist, who went off at 9-1, took first place, just ahead of Commissioner, a 28-1 long-shot, and Medal Count, who went off with 24-1 odds.
