After the avalanche: Everest's deadliest accident

In April, an avalanche killed 16 Nepali Sherpa guides who were fixing ropes and ferrying supplies for their foreign clients to climb the 8,850-metre peak in the deadliest accident in the history of Everest climbing. The deaths triggered a ban after the Nepali government refused to close the mountain.
