There I was, in the middle of a personal development workshop with entrepreneurs. The exercise was around values. Everyone was handed a set of cards, each with a personal value on it: “be a good parent,” “make lots of money,” “have loads of friends,” “make an impact on the world” (these were just a few of the cards, but you get my drift). We were each given monopoly money and instructed to buy, sell, or trade values to ultimately get the ones that were most important to us. Like typical entrepreneurs, my friends went straight for things like “be free”, “create wealth,” “be a great leader,” and “have a greater impact on the world.” But there was only one card that I knew I had to have, and it was a card that most of the group didn’t even glance at. That card was: “be happy in all that I do.” And so I quickly traded away all of my cards to get the one I wanted.
