U.S. measles outbreak sets record for disease eliminated nearly 15 years ago

What is measles?

Measles is an infectious viral disease that occurs most often in the late winter and spring. It begins with a fever that lasts for a couple of days, followed by a cough, runny nose, and conjunctivitis (pink eye). A rash starts on the face and upper neck, spreads down the back and trunk, then extends to the arms and hands, as well as the legs and feet. After about 5 days, the rash fades the same order in which it appeared.' height='259' alt='Measles rash' width='460' src='http://news.guugll.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/u-s-measles-outbreak-sets-record-for-disease-eliminated-nearly-15-years-ago.jpg' />

Measles outbreaks seem to be accelerating, and in the last five months have caused more U.S. illnesses than in any entire year since 1996.
