Sony Corporation’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2 has earned $549 million worldwide as of Sunday, after about a month of worldwide play. Under normal circumstances, such a film would be viewed as at least a solid hit if not an out-and-out smash. It may out-gross ‘s much-buzzed about Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which has $695m and probably doesn’t have much left in the can beyond crossing $700m, and there is no guarantee that 20th Century X-Men: Days of Future Past can get high enough above its previous franchise high of $459m to challenge Spider-Man 2 version 2. Yet as it marches toward a plausible $700m+ global total, the box office performance of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 feels incredibly disappointing. In the bid to reboot and then in the bid to copy Marvel, Sony’s Spider-Man franchise has lost its superiority.
