Kim Dotcom to launch cryptocurrency

Remember Kim Dotcom? This German-Finnish entrepreneur made headlines in the past as the founder of Megaupload, a website where it was easy to put up illegal content for download.

After some time arguing with authorities, he has now returned and loves to shine his light on recent technological developments. Guess what, he loves cryptocurrencies.

The Internet Party

Kim Dotcom founded a political party in New Zealand, called The Internet Party. Even though The Internet Party is unregistered, it has a clear view on what should be improved in the country. Cheaper internet and more tech jobs are the core elements of what the party stands for. In order to obtain this, they plan on introducing a cryptocurrency for international transactions that would work parallel with the existing New Zealand dollar.

The Internet Party will support the introduction of a New Zealand-sponsored digital currency that is safe, secure and encrypted, providing for instant international transactions at minimal cost. By becoming a digital currency leader, New Zealand can become a key hub for a growing financial sector.

The idea was made public on the party’s website. Immediately after, several prominent New Zealanders had something to say about this idea. While most of them thought it was a bold move, they also pointed out the risks of a project like this. Among these critics was Dr. David Tripe. Tripe works at Massey University in New Zealand since 1994 after spending 17 years in the banking world. He openly dismissed the party’s plan, stating that there was already such a digital currency in existence for the New Zealand dollar. “What tends to happen in these situations is the currencies get a little misaligned with each other and the one that is less reliable drives out the one that is more reliable,” Tripe told Stuff, a New Zealand news website.

Vikram Kumar, Chief Executive of The Internet Party, responded by saying that the new digital currency would fall under the same rules as any official New Zealand currency. “It will be subject to taxation as any currency in New Zealand is. Every transaction involving this new digital currency will be treated the same as New Zealand dollar transactions.” Kumar said.

Bitcoin 2.0

This is not the first time a country plans on introducing their very own cryptocurrency. Just a few weeks ago Auroracoin had his ‘airdrop’, giving every person in Iceland 31.8 Auroracoins. We also saw the arrival of Hullcoin in the city of Hull, the world’s first local government cryptocurrency. A lot can be said about these local digital currency initiatives. Some might say it’s a good move, since local currencies can have a higher chance of succeeding. You only have to convince one government, and China cannot ban you (that last one was a joke; Bitcoin is NOT banned in China).

On the other hand, the idea of new cryptocurrencies does not work well with all the Bitcoin 2.0 talk floating around right now. Just yesterday, CCN posted an article about a new concept called sidechains and how it could revolutionize the virtual currency universe. One thing is certain; the coming months will be crucial for Bitcoin and the altcoins. Whether Kim Dotcom will have a place in this story, remains to be seen. My guess is he’ll have to change his strategy if he wants his ideas to be successful.

The Rise Of Bitcoin

Bitcoin Markets Rise On News Of Chinese Bitcoin Exchanges’ Response Plan To Bank Accounts Closing

Today at 10:35 local time, OKCoin posted an announcement to their website. The announcement was titled, OKCoin将暂停招商银行卡充值业务及应对预案公告: OKCoin Announces Suspension Of China Merchant Bank Card Recharge And Response Plan. OKCoin revealed that they received oral notification from their bank, the China Merchants Bank, that their deposit services were to be terminated. The Xi’erqi branch of the China Merchants Bank, which had a strong working relationship with OKCoin, revealed that the notification was passed down from upper management within the bank, much like what happened with the Agricultural Bank of China and the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China. Interestingly enough, this is also the latest move out of the National Australia Bank.

In response to this news, just another glancing blow in an onslaught of bad news out of China, the Bitcoin markets took an unexpected upturn. Bitcoiners have observed that this upturn in the market was largely led by Huobi, though all Bitcoin exchanges followed suit. Obviously, news of Chinese Bitcoin Exchanges closing Bank card recharges is already priced in seeing as how several similar announcements have been made in the last few weeks. The “new news” is OKCoin’s Response Plan.

Yesterday morning in China, BtcTrade and Huobi were informed by their respective banks of a similar end to their business accounts. The respective city and county branches of the Agricultural Bank of China and the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China both informed their Bitcoin business partners that they had to suspend bank card recharges in the next week. Weeks ago, on 4/3/14, several Chinese Bitcoin Exchanges, including OKCoin, announced the end of yuan deposits via 3rd party payment processors. Before that, Bter was the first to receive a notice directly referencing the PBOC notice that nobody from the Bitcoin community has yet, or may ever, see. On 3/27/14, Chinese reporters from Caixin claimed to have seen the PBOC document and published a synopsis of its contents. The title of the supposed notice is this: 关于进一步加强比特币风险防范工作的通知, or the Notice on Further Strengthening Bitcoin Risk Prevention Measures. In the notice, the PBOC called for strict adherence to its 12/05/13 statement, informing these entities that they needed to halt all business with Bitcoin related companies and sites by 4/15/14.

Response Plan

OKCoin presented a 2 point response plan to the closing of their bank account by China Merchants Bank.

1. A New Yuan Recharge method using codes

2. An overseas website

I believe that OKCoin is using a new yuan deposit method similar to the one being used by BTC China at the moment, which BTC China created shortly after the original PBOC notice back in December 2013. Furthermore, they are planning to open an overseas website. OKCoin was intentionally vague about whether this overseas website would be inside China facing out, or outside China facing in. BtcTrade, in the same vein, revealed their response plan yesterday as well. BtcTrade has already registered their company in Hong Kong, Japan, and the USA and are also planning to open an “overseas website.” They will also start USD trading, and you really shouldn’t be surprised if more Chinese Bitcoin Exchanges start announcing this move. Just like you shouldn’t have been surprised when BTC-e announced Chinese Yuan trading.

No matter what the banks are doing, anywhere in the world, Bitcoin services (exchanges being just one example) are more than ready to adapt.

Memorycoin Community Votes in a New CEO

The new CEO of Memorycoin, Delinquency, took the time to respond to my questions after his successful campaign.

As many of you know, with the previous iteration of Memorycoin FreeTrade the outgoing CEO shut it down. This time the transition has been smooth and community support has been creating a backing behind Delinquency.

He has a clear vision of how he wants to keep Memorycoin growing and helping people while bringing a cohesive framework to the Memorycoin team and community.

Delinquency posted his response to my questions about the transition on mmc-square.com.

SF: Outline your plans and basic time frame for implementation.

Delinquency: I have an aggressive plan for Memory Coin, and it will be dependent on the team’s willingness to participate. Within a few hours of becoming CEO, I was introduced to their collaborative tool, slack. Slack is a very easy real-time messaging system, great for communication, but not for getting work done. I’ve had a chance to personally message most of the active members on our team, and they are certainly delighted to have me working with them.

Memory Coin has captivated me from the start. It was a coin made for the “economically and financially” marginalized. This will mean that anyone can start mining, and big investors who start mining operations won’t see a particularly huge advantage over normal miners.

I’d honestly like to equip Memory Coin with capabilities of infecting the world through social media and the internet. So say, you did not even know what Bitcoin was and wanted to learn about Memory Coin? We would have to design our applications to be presentable to the new users. This means modifying Memory Coin’s user interface and website to actually appeal to ‘your grandmother’. The phrase ‘your grandmother’ refers to a computer-dumb, non tech-savvy person who barely uses a computer. I feel that since Memory Coin was created for the purpose of everyone, it should be understood by everyone in the best way possible, as well.

Within a few days, I’d like to create some detailed guides on how Memory Coin works, and why it will survive. These guides will ultimately be worked on by the community and developer team so that it’s easily interpreted by an ordinary person and in almost every language. We’ll also have a guide on the unique structure of the coin and why it will succeed other coins.

In the same timeframe, I launched https://www.mmc-square.com. I invested slightly in an expensively reserved instance on Amazon EC2 because I knew that it worth it! This website is going to be our new home, and we know that the website just can’t remain in the forums forever. Since all of the memory coin projects are open source, we plan on hosting them on our server, including a p2pool, Electrum server, and host the memory wallet code.

I’m still getting to know everybody on the team. Our team’s relationship with each other is crucial to the success of the coin. I’d expect this learning process to take a few more days because there are four other members, and I have only reached out to a few of them.

I have plans to create several Memorycoin Videos in the next week and am committed to working with our community to help publicize Memorycoin.

SF: How do you feel the transition has gone?

Delinquency: The transition of becoming CEO was exhilarating. There were different emotions going through my mind. I kept thinking about how running against FreeTrade might put me on his bad side. That’s why I left a whole paragraph about him and how I wanted to make sure I had nothing against him, and that I had the same ideas as he did as CEO.

I also thought that it would be hard to be elected, amongst other things. I did not think it was that easy to catch shareholder’s votes. I assumed that I had to do things such as providing for the community first before they voted for me. All I gave them were words, ideas, but no developments. In the end, I knew that I had convinced the community because I got elected as CEO in a short amount of time.

The transition of joining our collaborative board was simply easy. I got used to the software (slack). I had a situation with attempting to contact everyone on the team and being criticized by a candidate at the time. It was hard for them to change to the new CEO as well, as they were used to minding their own terms and going about their own business – and I did not like the fact that we all had a redundancy of websites. Everyone wasn’t working together, and projects were not being completed.

I’m not going to give up because someone has mocked me or disrespected me. If we all want Memorycoin to succeed, the team and I have to put more work on development and collaboration, and that’s exactly what I want to achieve as CEO.

Being CEO is a big responsibility. Whatever I decide to publish has a direct impact on the community around us. Whether its good or bad will be reflected on the market price. As CEO and part of the main team of five other talented individuals voted by the block chain, I think that I cannot affect the coin as much as if one of the others has released information that may affect the valuation of MMC.

As CEO, I will not call for trading halts on exchanges unless there is an absolute necessity to. I cannot think of any instances off the top of my head because I have never had to deal with it. Just because trading is still open and causes more volatility in the market during a news or important release does not mean people have to trade it and aren’t always exposed to the event risk involved. People are trading just before and during the release because of very mixed expectations.

SF: How do you feel about being CEO?

Delinquency: I enjoy every minute of being CEO. We all know it’s a hard job and knowing that the community believes in my ideas excels and motivates me. Even if I get voted off the team, I’ll still be working hard to continue campaigning towards becoming CEO again. Shareholders need to know how consistent the candidates are willing to work to base their expectations for the development in Memorycoin. Also from another point of view – technically, each next candidate is going to receive less payment for each grant block because of the reducing block reward so I do not see any problem with serving my term to its fullest, even if other CEO’s get the job.

Being CEO sometimes puts too much pressure on and I just know that if I stress out too much; I can just hit the gym and lift heavier weights to reduce stress (this method always works, lol). Besides from that, after long days of working; I’m only human, I get tired just like anybody else. Sometimes I worry because if I screw up, the coin can take a hit, but I may screw up my reputation with the community and lose votes. I just try to tell myself that everything I do or attempt to accomplish are just steps closer to helping aiding the adoption of Memorycoin. It’s important to try to not do anything wrong because little things can make big changes to the future of Memorycoin.

SF: How has Memorycoin and Bitcoin changed your life?

Delinquency: Cryptocurrencies are the future. I truly believe that the best currencies cannot fluctuate as much as 2-3% within a week unless there is a serious problem with the system. In contrast to normal currency, the banks print the money not mostly in physical form. Most of the money is printed electronically. This is happening all the time on Forex markets as huge banks who wish to profit minimize and/or increase profits by trading for another currency. I trade the Forex markets and know exactly what moves a currency. It’s very volatile, and if you get to look at it, the market is completely irrational and liquid.

Memorycoin is a change to that. Demand is automatically shaped; supply is always decreasing, and there’s no telling that the developer team cannot succeed. Plus, everyone can play a role in the dynamics of Memorycoin by using their voting powers. The only dilemma we may need to work on is that bigger shareholders may be counted as more votes in the system.

BTC/Fiat is a disaster. I’ve never seen such dramatic changes in price that has outright depressed all cryptocurrencies as a whole. Bitcoin has taken a hit with the shutdown of the major exchange mtgox, but it was obviously MT (Empty) to close down to hackers emptying their reserves. You could have seen this happening from a mile away – their banks were shut down in the US and withdrawals already took more than three weeks to process. Now with all these issues with China banning banks from using the instrument Bitcoin and the US trying to tax our gains on profits from bitcoin, the community is bound to be mixed on how Bitcoin can survive in the future.

Anyway, I never really invested into Bitcoin, but I played a part in my role as a miner. Mining Bitcoins were very easy especially when the difficulty was low and before ASICs came out, and since there were some websites that accepted Bitcoin in exchange for their services, I just sent my Bitcoins to their payment address and got what I needed without having to use a credit card. If I had known of the potential price spike of Bitcoin to over $1,000, I would have held every one of them instead of gambling them on satoshidice.

Memorycoin was definitely a big hit when it came out. Everyone went smooth, and our developers pushed new projects out very quickly. However, the past haunted the present. People who already opposed the coin and the maker already started their campaign to corrupt the coin. It was just bad to have someone do that to any coin, but I truly believe that, in the end, Memorycoin will eventually lead to greatness.

Memorycoin is on solid footing with Delinquency as the new CEO and it is already moving forward to a more secure future. Additionally, FreeTrade gracefully stepping down when the voting was done is also a huge boon. I think big things are in store for Memorycoin now, and it will continue to grow and help people.

Delinquency is already hard at work behind the scenes with the other officers and they have even gotten a new forum up.

Feathercoin Weekly Update #25

The Heroes

Feathercoin Key Stats

343 days since genesis block creation

Approx. 37,500,000 of Feathercoins created

Approx. 16.36 days behind target generation rate

Today’s news is brought to you by the heroes. The ones who stick by you through thick and thin, who know how to say ‘no’ to the time wasters because they already said YES to something more important. The people whose values are clear and who turn up everyday hungrier than the day before.

I’m a big fan of Authentic Enthusiasm. It’s about reaching a point in your life where you just understand what makes you unique, you finally realise what it is you are here to learn and have to give. It stands opposed to False Enthusiasm, which is an ego driven excitement. It’s getting caught up in general mood and being carried away by it rather than responding authentically and giving out what is uniquely yours.

When we first get excited about an idea it’s very hard to know whether the idea will still excite us tomorrow or next week. It’s hard to know whether we will be able to keep our energy levels up during the dip. I can’t lie, I don’t have a conclusive answer on how to tell the difference so instead I prefer to keep on learning from the experts who don’t need words to say everything that needs to be said…

Well I know for sure that the Technical Development area is busy as I have barely spoken to Bush in a while, as you know I let the Dev’s get on with what they do but I think they should get a mention for working hard in the background : so thank you, ghostlander, Wellenreiter, wrapper and Bushstar and to all those that have input in the Tech Dev area.

TL;DR

by Chris

Living life authentically and working towards truth isn’t easy and it’s not something that can easily be put in to words. Over the months I have tried to shape this newsletter in to a platform for those who are authentic, resilient and who push themselves in to new areas of learning and talents. It isn’t really the money we want anyway, it’s each other. And the people who will shape the future will be the heroes, the ones with grit, who turn their whole lives in to works of art, the ones who never stop learning.

Paul Vernon on Worthy Altcoins, Pre-Mining and Compliance

Florida-based exchange Cryptsy trades in over 130 cryptocurrencies, and cryptocurrencies alone. There are no government-denominated currency trading pairs on the exchange. At least, not yet.

Cryptsy regularly exceeds 2,300 BTC in volume on a 24-hour basis. That makes it the largest crypto-to-crypto exchange, at which people routinely trade altcoins for bitcoin, and vice versa.

So, where did the idea of a cryptocurrency-only altcoin exchange come from? How does Cryptsy decide to add new coins? And will the company take compliance seriously when it adds fiat into its enormous mix of digital currencies?

CoinDesk sat down with Paul Vernon, CEO and founder of the exchange, to find out.

The accidental exchange

Vernon started the exchange because of the demand that arose from mining various altcoins.

He started a number of mining pools for alternative cryptocurrencies, first with litecoin, then with feathercoin and so on and so forth. Vernon eventually amassed a host of different pools, mining a numerous array of altcoins.

Said Vernon:

“I had like 20 pools I was running. And people had all these various coins that you couldn’t trade anywhere.”

Vernon was accruing fees in coins associated with running each pool. The problem was, there wasn’t an exchange for him to sell many of these cryptocurrencies. So the next logical step was to start one.

“Initially [the exchange] was just for those users. I probably had a couple thousand users in those pools. And it was just going to be a small thing for the users of the pools so they could trade,” he said.

“It organically grew into something much larger.”

Cryptsy now has over 200,000 users registered and over 70,000 are active, having logged in within the past seven days, according to Vernon.

Voting for altcoins

Vernon says that, for a time, Cryptsy just added coins that looked technically sound from a source code perspective. Now, however, the exchange is using a voting system to introduce new cryptocurrency trading pairs.

Iceland-based Auroracoin was an example of this process.

Said Vernon:

“Auroracoin was one of the first coins that we chose from the voting list, where people can vote on coins.”

The system is a mix of incentivized voting ballots. Every user gets a free vote for a coin. Also, users can spend Cryptsy points, which are accumulated through trading on the exchange.

Voting with bitcoin donations is also another method for Cryptsy’s users to voice an opinion on which altcoins should be added. User input is important to this process being open:

“We have to listen to the majority; try to get a sense of what people like. I wanted to add some transparency of how we added coins.”

Coins with volume

Adding new altcoins for trading can be exciting for Cryptsy’s users, but Vernon says that sometimes doing so can cause problems.

One coin that unexpectedly caused issues was dogecoin, where trading volume jumped immediately on the new Cryptsy DOGE/BTC trading pair. Said Vernon:

“When I initially added [dogecoin], I had no idea the kind of volume it was going to have. And I’ve actually had to swap out wallets because the wallet got so huge, like 2.5 GB.”

At the time, the Cryptsy dogecoin wallet got so large so quickly that withdrawals and deposits were briefly delayed.

Vernon has also noticed relatively high trading volume for something called devcoin, which is a foundation that pays developers to create things:

“Devcoin gets quite a bit of volume. It’s one that’s been around for quite some time. We get people who have received the coins, and they exchange them for bitcoin.”

Pre-mining principles

In the early days of altcoins, many were pre-mined in order for the developer to reap the financial rewards if a coin should become successful.

Charlie Lee’s creation of litecoin changed that. Lee believed there needed to be a silver to bitcoin’s gold, and when he created litecoin, he didn’t pre-mine it.

Said Vernon:

“Well, originally it was one of those kind of things that turned you off, the word ‘pre-mined’. You’re like, I don’t want anything to do with it.”

Cryptsy’s stance is that, if the pre-mining is carried out not to benefit the developer, but to benefit something else, it’s acceptable.

Auroracoin is an example of that, with coins being pre-mined for free distribution to Icelandic citizens, although that coin’s distribution allocation has negatively affected its price.

Said Vernon:

“Maybe we shouldn’t even call it pre-mine, just because of the word. Maybe we should call it pre-allocation.”

Significant proof

The fact that Cryptsy currently has 157 cryptocurrency trading pairs means that Vernon has a lot of experience in comparing different types of cryptocurrencies.

Because of this, the idea of a proof-of-work algorithm that actually works to solve a problem is of interest to him:

“Primecoin is pretty cool. They’ve actually found quite a few primes that nobody knew about. But what are we going to do with those [prime numbers], I don’t know.”

So far, Vernon hasn’t come across a proof-of-work system other than primecoin that does something substantial from a computational standpoint. But he has thought of something that might be useful for humanity:

“Protein folding. That would be something that would be really nice to have: a proof of work where the work is really doing something, solving problems,” he said.

Vernon pointed out with the hashing power that the Bitcoin network has, it could be considered, “the biggest supercomputer in the world.”

Preparing for fiat

Cryptsy does not deal with fiat money, but it will sometime in the future. Vernon started the exchange without the use of government-backed money as a method of exchange because it was an easier business to get off the ground:

“Mainly I didn’t want to get into fiat because of the regulatory issues. And so [cryptocurrency-to-cryptocurrency] seemed like a good entry point.”

Crypsty has been working through a lengthy process to be in a position to accept fiat money on its platform, but it is taking a lot of time.

Some of the delay is down to working with accountants that have to get used to the concept of cryptocurrencies; some of it is because Vernon wants to set an example of diligence:

“It’s a long process, and we want to make sure we do it right. It’s not something I want to do without knowing that the way we do it is the right way.”

With this in mind, he has sent four of his employees to become CAMS certified. This is a credential offered by the Association of Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialists that, the associations says, “denotes proven knowledge in the detection and prevention of money laundering”.

Vernon says that he expects Cryptsy to be one of the only exchanges to have that number of people with CAMS certification on its staff.

Crypto-to-crypto was a way to get Cryptsy off the ground, but Vernon wants to set an example for how to do things the right way to ensure long-term stability of the exchange.

He discusses this at conferences, and was a on a panel at San Francisco’s recent CoinSummit event talking about alternative cryptocurrencies.

Vernon shares the government’s uneasiness about decentralized money being used in nefarious ways. As he sums it up:

“Our concern is, and the government’s concern is, money laundering. So we need to kind of be the poster children of how to do [compliance] correctly. So I’m not going to launch [a fiat currency option] until I’m ready to be on the poster.”
